Contract Inspection Services

While many Carlson customers benefit from our in-house quality lab, we also offer contract inspection as a standalone service to any new or existing customers as well. Our quality lab consists of the latest coordinate measuring technology with four coordinate measuring machines that provide a number of measurement strategies for our customers including tactile point measuring, full-contact tactile measurement and non-contact laser scanning. Touch Probe Measurement

We offer precision measurement services on four CMM machines. Our quality team is skilled in metrology, CMM technology, and multiple CAD formats. Our Renishaw TP20, SP600 and SP25 probes allow for point and full contact surface scanning. Point data can be used for both part verification and reverse engineering.

  • Constant contact or touch points
  • 5-axis dynamic positioning of probes
  • Extensive array of probe lengths, diameters and articulating heads

Laser Scanning

The Hexagon HP-L 10.6 fixed head Laser scanner and the Hexagon (Romer) Absolute Arm 7-Axis laser scanner encompass a wide range of scanning needs. Surface types include machined, stamped, forged, casted, painted, sand cores, composites and softer materials like plastics, rubber, clay or wood. Point data can be used for both part verification and reverse engineering.

  • 0.0015″ scanning accuracy
  • Integration of multiple scans from different orientations
  • SHINE Technology eliminates the need for dusting most parts prior to scanning
  • Integrated with PC-Dmis and Design-X

Reverse Engineering

Some tooling surfaces are modified over time so the original CAD program (or model) no longer matches the production tool. Carlson can scan the tooling surfaces and create a new CAD model via NX or Design-X for subsequent use. Color maps are also easily created to show the dimensional difference between the scanned surface and the associated CAD model. Likewise, production parts can be compared to tooling surfaces. These comparisons can also be used to quantify process distortions, which aids in diagnosing why a part does not match the production tooling surfaces that formed it. This methodology is applicable to molding, casting, stamping, forming, and other manufacturing processes.

CMM Equipment

Carlson has a variety of CMM capabilities including: Laser scanning, constant contact scanning and touch trigger probing. PC-DMIS and the newly implemented Design-X combine to cover or inspection platforms. Carlson’s CMM equipment includes:

  • DEA Alpha 129″ x 78″ x 59″
  • Brown & Sharpe Global 35″ x 59″ x 31″
  • Brown & Sharpe Performance 47″ x 35″ x 31″
  • Brown & Sharpe Performance 20″ x 20″ x 20″
  • Romer Absolute Arm with ASI Laser Scanning
  • 8,000 lbs under hook

Reporting Formats

  • APQP documentation
  • 3D colored surface analysis
  • Gauge R&R reports
  • GD&T reporting
  • Spreadsheets, custom forms and more
